The Washington, DC Police Memorial & Museum will be the official host of law enforcement museum representatives from across North America in April of 2024. The North American Association of Law Enforcement Museums (NAALEM) is a network of representatives from police, corrections and other law enforcement museums across Canada and the United States. The organization holds a yearly conference to bring together museum officials to improve their museums, collections, archives and visitor experience through networking.
The DC Police Memorial & Museum, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, officially dedicated its newly-renovated memorial fountain and brand new memorial wall this past May. The next stage of fulfilling its mission will be to create the museum portion of the project. The Memorial & Museum Board of Directors, in collaboration with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), has carefully stored the artifacts from the original museum and is seeking items of historical interest related to the MPD to ensure they are preserved for posterity. The proposed museum will make these artifacts available for viewing by the public and will be located within the new temporary headquarters at 441 4th Street, NW, Washington, DC. The long-term plan is to return to the Henry J. Daly Building at 300 Indiana Avenue, NW. The Memorial and Museum Board is pleased to act as host for the NAALEM and have the opportunity to spread awareness of the rich and unique history of policing in the nation’s capital.
Other locations chosen for the conference include Cleveland, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Calgary and Orange County. Washington, DC joins the list this coming spring, from Monday, April 15th – Wednesday, April 17th. Registrants are now booking hotels and more information will be forthcoming at the NAALEM website.
