Sergeant Mark Eckenrode was a 23-year veteran of the Metropolitan Police Department. He was last assigned to the Court Liaison Division at MPD Headquarters. Sergeant Eckenrode is survived by his wife and three children.

Sgt. Mark Eckenrode was remembered Tuesday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in downtown Washington as a devoted D.C. police officer and veteran of the U.S. Navy who earned many commendations over a career that spanned 23 years. The 54-year-old died April 6 after suffering a medical emergency at work. Over two decades, Eckenrode policed six presidential inaugurations, helped protect two popes during their visits to Washington and had assignments on several elite units.
